October 1st, 2009: Second Day on Mackinac Island

Julie and Rhonda awakened to another beautiful day on Mackinac Island. Following a big breakfast at our resort, we ventured out into the cold morning (34 degrees Fahrenheit). We bicycled first to the Butterfly Pavilion, where Gary and Josh were able to see us live online via streaming video. Thousands of gorgeous, colorful butterflies flew about in the warm, 90-degree pavilion--quite a contrast to the chilliness outdoors! Then we bicycled to the Grand Hotel (made famous once again by the Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymour film "Somewhere in Time"), where we toured the public areas inside the hotel and the lovely gardens along the base of the hill below the hotel. Leaving the Grand Hotel, we coasted down to the main shopping district where we looked for souvenirs and grabbed a snack before catching the return ferry to the mainland. We were blessed with two perfect fall days, sandwiched between rainy days before and after our getaway. The autumn foliage couldn't have been more lovely. Rhonda was pleased that she could still ride a bicycle after so many years... Thanks, Julie, for sharing Mackinac Island!
