The first port of our cruise--Labadee, Haiti--was developed along the northern coast of Haiti by Royal Caribbean International. This small community sustained by the cruise line has remained unscathed by the earthquake damage that so rocked the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
After a walking tour of the area, we sought beach chairs within view of our ship. Julie and Kristen rented floating mats, then enjoyed being propelled across the water by Erin. The two Garys soon joined the fun, twisting and tipping the occupants of the mats. Rhonda eventually waded out to photograph the action. Not tempted by the warm Caribbean waters, Kimberly enjoyed reading a novel while lounging in the shade. Ron, who wished that he'd brought his swim trunks to shore, elected to return to the ship for a swim in the pool following lunch. This was our first taste of much more fun to come at future ports of call!
We celebrated Kimberly's 33rd birthday at a festive dinner that evening. The wait staff serenaded Kim with their rendition of "Happy Birthday" complete with an individual pasty and lighted candle. Kimberly received assorted presents and gift cards from family members. We lingered longer, closing the dining room that evening. While she missed her hubby and kids, it was wonderful to celebrate two family birthdays together during our cruise!
