This is the first of several rainy days during our trip. In spite of the on-and-off drizzle, we enjoy a morning in Central Amsterdam. We eat a nice lunch at La Ruche in the DeBijenkorf Department Store on Dam Square, then meet our guide at the National Monument for an afternoon walking tour. Gary, Rhonda, and the Edelmans from Ithaca, New York, make up the tour group. Audrey Edelman, who is recovering from recent cancer surgery and chemotherapy, chats with Rhonda about the "Big C" during much of the afternoon. (Thank goodness many sights in this walking tour are also included in Tuesday's bike tour. Rhonda will have a much-needed second chance to hear the narrative!)
The walking tour ends conveniently at the Anne Frank House, where we are to meet Gary's family. We spot them standing along the opposite side of the canal waving vigorously!
After touring the Anne Frank House, we eat at an Argentinian restaurant along the Damrak, then return by train to the Marriott Courtyard near Schiphol Airport.
