Chateau de Chambord

Built by Francis I with design help from Leonardo da Vinci, Chambord is the largest of all the Loire castles, measuring 170 yards by 128 yards with 440 rooms. The central double-spiral stairway designed by da Vinci (two parallel stairways wrapped around each another), is one of the most remarkable features of the castle.

The gorgeous roof terrace includes 800 columns, 365 chimneys, spires and pinnacles intermingled, all detailed with a sculptor's chisel. Under the kings, the court spent much of their time on the terrace. From here, they watched the progress of the hunts, military exercises, reviews and tournaments.

The park surrounding Chambord is the largest enclosed forest park in Europe, with over 13,000 acres. This forest provided the castle with abundant hunting grounds. There were 300 falcons at Chambord, along with the finest hunting dogs in all of Europe.
