Church at Angoville au Plain

Two American medics, Bob Wright and Ken Moore of the 501st Airborne, set up an aid station in this church after landing in Normandy during the wee hours of June 6, 1944. Wright and Moore treated an estimated 82 men, including several Germans and a wounded child. The area was unsecured for many hours and German patrols entered the church on at least two occasions. Wright and Moore ordered them to leave their guns outside or to leave the church. Incredibly, the Germans followed these instructions. The area was eventually secured and many of the wounded were evacuated. Two died in the church. Two days after D-Day, while medics were treating the wounded, they heard a creak. A hidden door opened up and out came two German soldiers who'd been hiding in the church. They surrendered.
