MONT ST-MICHEL: March 17, 2011

The ancient abbey at Mont St-Michel is featured in France's film presentation at Disney's EPCOT theme park. Each time we see the amazing aerial footage taken from high above the island fortress, we renew our wish to visit this magnificent place. Clearly, others have the same wish, as Mont St-Michel is the third most visited attraction in France, with 3.5 million tourists each year. Only the Eiffel Tower and Louvre receive more visitors.

We take the 7:30 train from Bayeux, arriving at Pontorson station around 9:30 a.m., then hop a bus for the 15-minute ride to Mont St-Michel. Unfortunately, the weather is cold and cloudy, but this does not dampen our enthusiasm. We are ready for the steep hike up the steps and ramparts to the towering abbey above. These pictures speak for themselves. The abbey does not disappoint.

By afternoon, the weather is clear. We are grateful for improved views from the island to the mud flats below. Only 10% of visitors actually see Mont St-Michel surrounded by water. Most see it towering above a plain of mud flats. Still, it is truly breathtaking!
