VISIT TO LE CATEAU-CAMBRESIS: March 24, 2011

Our French hosts, professors at the Catholic University of Lille, take us on a beautiful drive into the French countryside near Cambrai. We visit an impressive dairy, owned and operated by a family of four. We are wowed by their newest acquisition, an expensive, state-of-the-art carousel that milks thirty cows simultaneously. The family team processes the milk, cream, yogurt and cheeses on site, then markets these products to area retailers. We are presented with a large bag of tasty yogurts in a full-array of typical and unusual flavors.

We stop in a small French village for a most delicious four-course lunch. Gary also enjoys some yogurt! Nearly two hours later, we emerge from the restaurant to embark on a short drive to the Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, the birthplace of Henri Matisse. Besides works by Matisse, there is also a special exhibit of sculptures, sketches and paintings by Rodin. It is a great end to a lovely day.
