For ten days prior to December 27th, Gary carefully monitored The Weather Channel hoping for clear weather to drive from Detroit to Columbus--our route to attend Carter's baptism. It was no big surprise when we looked out the window that morning to see snow flurries. Although we have lived in cold climates and have years of driving experience on snow-packed, icy roads, we have come to feel very skittish about winter driving. We have lived these past 22 years in the snow-free zone of central Texas.
The flurries never amounted to much during the drive to Columbus. However, the streets of Reynoldsburg (just outside Columbus) did become snow packed late that afternoon. The purity of this snowfall was a nice reminder that Carter would be baptized--washed clean from all sin--on this beautiful, white-covered day.
Carter was totally "immersed" in the joy of the day. He had a special glow and excitement as he greeted each of us. This was his big day and he could feel it. The baptism service was a very spiritual one. Baby Ethan joined in the singing of "I Am a Child of God" bringing tears to many eyes. The talks and musical numbers were excellent. Hopefully, Carter will always remember the special Spirit he felt on his baptism day!
As we approached the Brown's home following the baptism that evening, we once again fell in love with the Christmas lights in Kim's neighborhood. Several years ago, the residents along this street (3-4 blocks long) banded together. Each home owner purchased a system or "box" that synchronizes the Christmas lights of his/her home with the lights of other homes in the neighborhood, programming each to a series of Christmas songs. The Christmas music can be accessed via a special frequency over the car radio as you drive through the neighborhood. Too cute!
Following the baptism, Kimberly served a lovely buffet of croissant sandwiches and fruit compote. Then guests attacked the tiered dessert tray of brownies, cookies and mini cheesecakes. During the meal, Kim played a touching DVD of Carter's life thus far -- photos of Carter with his family and relatives through his eight years on earth. This was thoughtfully set to music. Wonderful job, Kimmie!
